What is Overnight Care?

There are two types of overnight care – one where the caregiver is awake throughout the night and one where the caregiver is able to sleep.

The first, awake or “active” overnight care, involves a caregiver who remains awake throughout their shift to provide assistance for the client. The main objective of an active overnight caregiver is to ensure the safety and comfort of the senior. This type of care is ideal for aging adults who require specialized care such as palliative care, complex care, or high dependency needs. It is also suitable for seniors experiencing mental health conditions and may pose a threat to themselves due to being confused between day and night.

The second type of overnight care involves a caregiver who does not need to stay awake at all times. They provide some assistance with getting to bed and waking up in the morning, and stay there throughout the night in case of emergency. This Overnight Care package with Legacy Home Care was developed for seniors who are relatively independent during the night and only require limited assistance to head to the bathroom, for example.

Understanding Overnight Care

Getting up through the night regularly to tend to the needs of your senior loved one can be both physically and mentally demanding. This is especially true for informal or family caregivers who are also holding full-time jobs in the daytime. Being overwhelmed or overloaded isn’t a good situation for the caregiver or the individual being cared for.

Overnight care with a hired home health aide offers a team approach that is comprised of a plan that takes care of all the needs of the senior during the night. The long-term perspective of overnight care services is preventive, sustainable and to improve the quality of life of the senior.

At Legacy Home Care, we will work with you and your loved ones to create a custom plan that can ensure professional care is offered to your senior loved ones.

When is the Right Time to Engage Overnight Care Services?

If your senior loved one has a high tendency to wander around or away from home at night, experiences difficulty sleeping through the night, has intensive care needs, or regularly wakes up feeling disoriented, they can benefit from Legacy Home Care’s awake overnight care services.

Consider our Overnight Care package when:

  • You or your loved one would appreciate the extra peace of mind knowing a qualified caregiver is there in case of emergency at night
  • You are worried about a loved one being alone at night.
  • You or a loved one needs a little assistance with nighttime and morning routines.
  • Your loved one is in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia and has sometimes had confusion at night.

We have the flexibility to transition from awake care to our Overnight Care package and vice versa as needs of the client changes. Our home health aides are specially-trained and will communicate with the care team if a client is needing more or less care throughout the night.

Benefits of Overnight Care Services

Our overnight care caregivers stay overnight in your own home and look after your senior loved one from late evening until the following morning. Family members can rest easy at night knowing that their senior loved one is being cared for and have their personal needs taken care of throughout the night. You can choose from the active and in-active overnight care services to accommodate the needs of your senior loved one.
