How do our Live-In Caregiver Services work?

Peace Of Mind

“We Find The Best Fit For Your Family”

Watch Video
  • A live-in caregiver provides care throughout the day.
  • You provide our professional caregiver with a sleeping space in a private location and three meals per day (usually the same as the foods you eat).
  • The caregiver takes short breaks, so they can relax and tend to personal business, and have time to rest at night, but they are still present should an emergency arise.
  • If your live-in caregiver does not have a vehicle, you may opt to have your car driven while the caregiver performs their duties. Proof of insurance and a signed release of liability are required.

What Is Live-In Care?

With live-in services, you have a caregiver onsite 24 hours a day. You receive help with daily activities such as getting dressed, preparing meals and performing basic chores. Many clients with live-in care also benefit greatly from the companionship of having a compassionate caregiver to converse with right there in their home.

All too often, “live-in care” and “24-hour care” are viewed as the same thing. While both services provide in-home care for aging adults with a caregiver onsite 24 hours per day, there are distinct differences between the two services.

What are the Differences between Live-In Care & 24-Hour Care?

Live-In Care 24-Hour Awake Care
– A single caregiver remains at the client’s home 24 hours per day. – Caregivers work in shifts, with typically 3-4 caregivers working in the client’s home each 24-hour period.
– Live-In caregivers are allowed time for breaks to attend to personal business and rest at least 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep each night. – Caregivers are given regulatory breaks, however, do not require private space for extended periods of rest or sleep.
– Caregivers share meals with the client(s) in the home at the client’s expense, offering a great opportunity for meaningful conversations at mealtime. – 24-hour awake staff are responsible for providing their own food.
– Less expensive than 24-hour care – More expensive than live-in care
– A great option for aging adults who need some assistance with daily activities and monitoring throughout the day but needs little assistance at night. – Appropriate for clients who have conditions that require frequent monitoring throughout day & night, or are unable to be unattended for even short periods of time.

Both Live-In Care & 24-Hour Awake Care include trained home health aides or Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) and are designed to help older adults continue to live comfortably in their own home with dignity and as much independence as possible.

Benefits of Live-In Care

Hiring live-in care services offers clients the ability to stay at home and can be a preferable alternative to moving to an assisted living or other senior community. Having a specially-trained caregiver in the home day and night to assist with daily activities and companionship offers the client and their loved ones peace of mind for multiple reasons:

  • Aging in Place: Having live-in caregivers allows for the client(s) to stay in their own homes rather than move to a senior community or assisted living – which is preferred by most people.
  • Lower Cost: A single live-in caregiver is much less expensive than hiring 24-hour awake care, while still having someone onsite at all times.
  • Flexible Services: In-home caregiver services allow for fluctuation in care needs with the ability to increase and decrease services as needed.
  • Individualized In-Home Services: Caregivers have many clients to attend to in assisted living, while the focus of in-home caregivers remains solely on the client or couple residing in the home.
  • Companionship Relationships: Clients often form meaningful bonds with their caregivers as there is often downtime to chat and get to know each other on a more personal level.

Live-in care services are a wonderful option for older adults who desire to age in place yet benefit from the assistance, safety, and companionship of an in-home cargiver.

Duties of a Live-In Caregiver

As mentioned, the responsibilities of live-in caregivers and hourly in-home caregivers are very similar and can be customized to the individual’s needs.

In-home caregiver services include:

  • Companionship and socialization
  • Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
  • Meal preparation, shopping, and transportation
  • Medication reminders
  • Monitoring or supervision for those with conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia

It is important that caregivers are specially trained as home health aides or Certified Nursing Assistants, as they are often the first to note changes in a client’s health and understand the importance of quickly communicating these changes with family members and the medical team.

Where’s the Best Place to Find a Caregiver?

  • Hiring a live-in caregiver through an agency can reduce risk while ensuring safety and reliability.
Hiring Privately

Some people believe that finding a private caregiver is the cheapest way to find a caregiver, however, the costs can add up when you consider payroll, taxes, worker’s compensation – not to mention the tedious vetting process of finding a good caregiver.

You may independently look for a live-in caregiver via:

  • Referral websites
  • Classified sections of the newspaper/magazines
  • Local senior service organizations like the MN Senior Linkage Line
  • Word-of-mouth and asking your personal network for recommendations

While hiring someone you know may be a good short-term option, keep in mind that if the caregiver becomes ill or cannot perform their duties for any reason, there isn’t an easy back-up plan and care duties often fall on family members’ shoulders.

Home Care Agencies

A home care agency, like Legacy Home Care, takes on all the liabilities and responsibilities in providing in-home care:

  • Most agencies license, bond, and ensure caregivers – it’s important to ask the agency you are working with to ensure this is the case.
  • Agencies have a pool of aides and caregivers that are able to fill in or replace caregivers as needed
  • They thoroughly vet their caregivers, including background checks, verifying driver’s licenses, etc.
  • Agencies provide needed assessments and nurse supervision to ensure that quality and appropriate care is being provided.
  • They handle the payroll and benefits for caregivers, including taxes, worker’s compensation and other expenses.

Home health agencies that provide live-in caregivers can be a bit more expensive than a privately found caregiver, however, they offer the convenience of specially trained, vetted caregivers without the time it takes to vet privately found caregivers.
